Amusement Park Physics

Real world applications of STEM principles can greatly enhance student interest and engagement. Imagine using an amusement park as a physics laboratory!

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is an amusement park in San Antonio, Texas, and four rides are investigated: a traditional gravity roller coaster, a looping gravity coaster, a Linear Induction Motor (LIM) launched coaster and a carousel. Investigate velocity, acceleration, work, power, energy and circular motion in the real world.

Activities are included for these rides which can be utilized during an actual visit to the park or completed in a classroom setting by providing students with certain data. A Teacher Guide with sample data and answers is included. Files are provided in Word format, so teachers can edit as they see fit.

Also included are videos of certain rides and sample data collected using Vernier sensors. Supplemental data is also provided for 12 additional rides at the park. All data is provided in Vernier Logger Pro and Graphical Analysis formats. Teachers can potentially create additional activities utilizing this data.

5th Grade Science Exemplar Lessons

These materials are not intended as an entire curriculum. Rather, they are a sample of activities that can help address various important concepts. Students should make predictions, design experiments, analyze data and justify their conclusions. There are six areas of study provided, and a folder is included for each instructional area, as well as folders for supporting information and media. The six areas of study are:

  1. Organisms and Environment
  2. Density
  3. Reflection/Refraction
  4. Electricity
  5. Force & Motion
  6. Earth Science

Contained within each instructional folder will be a summary document containing background information and descriptions of the activities. There will also be copies of handouts and a media folder containing photographs or videos that may be useful. The media may be used during introductory discussions or even paired with teacher-generated questions as a form of assessment. Also included in the media folders are photographs of actual classrooms, word walls, sample student work etc.

Palm Pipes

This is a physics lesson which can use open or closed pipes to calculate the speed of sound. A Vernier microphone system is used to collect data and a fft analysis is used to determine the fundamental frequency. The length of the pipe can then be used to determine wavelength, which then allows a calculation of the speed of sound. The fft analysis feature is available in Logger Pro computer software and the LQ2 and LQ3 devices. Only Graphical Analysis Pro has this capability in the GA world.  Directions and sample data is included.

Vibrations in a String: Do the Wave!

This is a physics lesson which looks at vibrating strings. A Vernier force sensor measures the vibrations in a plucked string, and various wave interactions are investigated. An fft analysis can allow you to look at the fundamental frequency and various harmonics. The fft analysis feature is available in Logger Pro computer software and the LQ2 and LQ3 devices. Only Graphical Analysis Pro has this capability in the GA world.  Directions and sample data is included.

What Floats Your Boat? A Study of Buoyancy

This is a lesson investigating buoyancy. A Vernier force sensor measures the apparent weight of a container as it is slowly submerged in water. Concepts of displacement and buoyancy are explored. Data analysis and linear functions are used to draw conclusions.   Directions and sample data is included.

Everything I needed to Know in Physics I Learned in Cartoons?

Student groups are assigned a short video clip from old Roadrunner cartoons. They are to develop a critical analysis of physics concepts and present their findings to their peers. Cartoon clips are included in MP4 and mov format.

$5.00

Science in the Movies?

Students analyze a movie clip from Raiders of the Lost Ark and use density concepts to decide if the scene is reasonable. Two different activities are included. One is more scripted, the other is more open ended. A short clip from the movie is also included.

$5.00

Bungee Science

Students conduct experiments using Barbie dolls to model bungee jumping. Elastic cords or rubber bands can be utilized. Two different activities are included. One requires a force or acceleration sensor which can lead to discussions of impulse. The other models cords and drop distance.

$5.00

Periodic Table

Two activities are included. One involves an alien periodic table that students analyze to determine trends and predict an unknown element. The other has students graph properties vs. atomic number for the first twenty elements. Students identify trends and make predictions.

$5.00

Bullet Ballistics

Conservation of Momentum is used to calculate the initial velocity of a bullet. A bullet was fired into a wooden block mounted on a Vernier Go Direct Sensor Cart. Sample data is included as Vernier Graphical Analysis files, and videos are also included in both mov and MP4 formats. Vernier Video Analysis can be used as well to analyze the data. Ten data trials are included which utilize different guns and ammunition. You can also compare a pistol vs. rifle using the same ammunition. These activities would not normally be able to be conducted in a typical classroom. Handouts and a teacher guide is included.

$25.00

Cricket Thermometer

Students will investigate the effect of temperature on chirping frequency of the

Snowy Tree Cricket. A linear function can model the data and allow mathematics to be used in analysis of biological data. Data can be graphed and analyzed using Vernier Graphical Analysis. Handouts and a teacher guide is included. Also included are files of actual cricket chirping in both wav and mp3 formats.
